The small town of San Gil is known as Colombia's adventure sports capital.
Don't be fooled by it's small size though, there is plenty to do here including activities such as white water rafting, mountain biking, trekking and caving. But even if you are not a big outdoor adventure sports fan, you can still spend a day walking the streets and enjoying the town's great restaurants followed by an afternoon (and evening) sipping wine in the town square.
My quick suggestions for San Gil:
- Eat lunch at El Mana's. For a set price of $10,000 COP, the lunch includes a fruit starter, salad, juice, soup, an entree with either chicken cordon bleu, beef, fish or lasagna, potatoes or rice, dessert and a coffee.
- A must for dinner is Sam's Pub. This restaurant has only been open for about 5 months but if the quality maintains, it will surely gain a strong following. I had the pleasure of enjoying one of the best steaks I've tasted in Colombia. It was an excellent cut of meat, prepared to perfection. I suggest the 250 gram filet for smaller appetites. The 400 gram filet is a very generous portion and should only be tackled after a full day of adventure sporting.
- Stay at Sam's VIP hostel. Meticulously clean, great atmosphere, nice outdoor patio and also a small rooftop swimming pool.
San Gil is located about 3 hours outside of Bucaramanga by bus. The ticket should cost around $15,000 COP. Connections to all major cities including Santa Marta to the north and Medellin to the south go through Bucaramanga.
